RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS, ÖREBRO
DEVELOPMENT OF “SMART HOUSING”
2019-2021
SANDELLSANDBERG+PAJU+MAGNOLIA

As part of the city of Örebro’s initiative to build “Smart City”, this proposal was selected. The architecture is based on an idea about synergies – that a combination of high- and low-tech measures can generate a combination of effects that together back up an ambition to contribute positively to both social and environmental sustainability. In close collaboration with the real estate developers that planned to manage the buildings themselves, housing with many built-in qualities, both within every apartment and in the shared spaces around the houses, were developed.

Questions/potential development: Private and public interests
How do we as architects communicate with developers/municipalities in order to establish trust and an understanding for conditions that enables us to promote relevant, effective, realistic solutions that can challenge conventions? What types of requirements can the municipality work with in relation to developers? How can our efforts when working with private interests also promote public interests? How do spaces interact and create possibilities in everyday lives? Where do we draw the line between public and private, and how can it be defined so that it may contribute value to both? What is the difference between visual and functional sustainability?
