landscape meetings

Picture a forest.
The first time you’re there you don’t know tree from tree

and everything melts together.
You feel lost, but in a nice way.
You use the trails that feel like they are laid out for you to follow
toward things you cannot yet anticipate.

You have a general idea of the direction you are going in,
and a trust in that if you make rational choices at each junction
you will eventually get there.
From time to time, you might find yourself back where you started unintentionally.
On the way, you may experience something fantastic.
Meet a bear. A jogger. See a beautiful sunrise. Anything unexpected.
And also some expected things.

Suddenly you may reach the edge of the forest
and see from a distance the point where you entered it.
The more time you spend in the forest the more you get to know it,
recognize patterns that allow you to navigate with more control.
You use the shadows the trees cast on the ground to navigate.

What is a future workspace?
This conceptual exploration based on the question of what a future workspace might look like translates an abstract idea about how a landscape works in terms of communication and spatial organization into architecture in order to see an alternative to “traditional” office-organization or space-making: challenging you to re-evaluate what space is assumed to be valuable by not minimizing communication-space. It is based on the idea that physical interactions and meetings will remain important to humans, but that what type of space is considered valuable may change. The notion of landscape is interpreted, tried as a concept, and the idea of probability and its influence over your life is experimented with, along with the non-hierarchical possibility of free movement towards the un-planned.

Section diagram, Common office structure: You go in through one entrance on the bottom floor, may have unplanned meetings in the lobby or elevator, and pass the same people on the way to your permanent desk every day. Spaces are created like stacked boxes and there is one – effective – way to get to your spot.

Plan diagram, Landscape office: You can go from anywhere to anywhere, and the possibilities of having unplanned meetings on the way are many many more. Workspaces are created between the elements that enable communication.
